On March 25, 2008 the EEOC announced that a federal judge had granted final approval of a consent decree resolving a class race discrimination lawsuit that it filed against Walgreens. Under the decree, Walgreens, a national drug store chain, will pay over $24 million to a class of thousands of African American workers. The decree also orders comprehensive injunctive relief designed to improve the company’s promotion and store assignment practices.
EEOC had filed its lawsuit against Walgreens in March 2007 alleging the company discriminated against African American retail management and pharmacy employees in promotion, compensation, and assignment.
